NEW DELHI/ADDIS ABABA. In the Indian state of Gujarat, sesame sowing for the summer crop is progressing rapidly. Ethiopia’s crop has been smaller than expected, but is still higher than last year’s production.

Soil moisture determines sowing

Despite the unusually high temperatures in March, sesame sowing in Gujarat is progressing rapidly. According to data from the local agricultural authority, 68,184 ha had already been sown with sesame seeds by 16 March, which is 14.7% more than the 59,461 ha that had been sown at this time last year. On average, around 120,439 ha are sown with sesame seeds annually in the Indian state for the summer crop; in spring 2025, for example, the acreage reached 122,532 ha, whereas in the previous year it was just 115,237 ha.
