Sesame seeds: tender could firm up prices

NEW DELHI/DALIAN. High sesame seed imports to India and lower demand are weighing on prices. Market players are hoping for some firming with a new sesame seed tender expected in the next few days.

Prices under pressure

Indian sesame seed traders imported more sesame seeds last year than in 2023. Between January and December 2024, imports totalled 150,496 mt, an increase of 20.7% compared to the 124,687 mt imported in the previous year. Around two thirds of shipments came from Brazil (+21.1% to 69,417 mt) and Nigeria (+266.0% to 32,557 mt), both of which recorded significant growth. Shipments from Sudan, however, fell by 59.2% to 15,655 mt during this period. Indian traders expect the high import demand to continue until the end of March.
