May frosts and stone fruit- who will suffer the most- farmers, producers or buyers?

South of Serbia, above all, famous for its production of cherries and plums, (famous Oblacinska sour cherry sort origins from there) expects “hot” summer. May frosts have caused significant drop in sour cherry and plum production- the similar situation is in Poland and Hungary. Therefore, the raw material prices are expected to be extremely high. This will consequently affect the export price of these products, whether they are used for oncentrate or jam production- tanks, bakery or  confectionary.

While on one hand, nowadays we have the situation that cabbage produced in the south of Serbia, thanks to extremely low prices, due to the lack of expected exports to the Russian market, which does not exceed  0,04 EUR/kg, is being destroyed, it seems that all the rage of producers will vanish through the purchase prices of sour cherries and plums. For example, for an expected purchase price (of raw material) of sour cherry of about 0,80 EUR/kg, export price of IQF pitted sour cherry for prompt delivery is expected to be around 1,50 EUR/kg. Similarly for the plum- for the purchase price of about 0,25 EUR/kg, the price of IQF halved plum is expected to be around 0,65 EUR/kg.
