DALIAN. Cheap imports of South American soybean are quite a challenge for China’s exporters. This, however, is not the only problem in summer.

Local industry struggles with American imports

China is the world’s leading importer for soybeans. Brazil, the USA and Argentina are the main trading partners. According to the American Soybean Association the country imports around 85-90 million mt per year. Issue is that domestic production, which amounted to around 5% of global production or 20.9 million mt in 2025/2026 according to USDA FAS estimates, cannot cover demand. Yet, China does export small volumes mainly to South Korea and Japan, which are currently acting as a lifeline as traders report.
