New crop arrivals have been limited to rural areas in Kerala in recent weeks and traders hope that this is about to change. Strict regulations on imported pepper slightly drove up the prices for black pepper as there are concerns that the supply chain may be disrupted in the domestic market. Surreptitious imports from Brazil, Indonesia and Malaysia have, however, kept the market under pressure in Kerala and Karnataka and reports state that pepper is directly being sold to consumer markets from the rural areas in Kerala. BRUSSELS. Although EU importers spent less on spices in 2025 than in the record year of 2024, the import value is still quite high as official statistics show. Record amounts were, in fact, spent on cardamom, fenugreek and spice mixtures, saffron and turmeric. Pepper tops the chart. While the year-to-year import value has risen for cinnamon, cloves and mace, the opposite is the case for capsicum, ginger and vanilla, cumin, nutmeg and coriander and curry.
