Spice market update: weak demand for cumin in China

Cumin seeds

Cumin seed prices have declined by more than 5% in the last six weeks and are currently depicting the same pattern. One driver is the weak demand from China. Another reason are arrivals. Yet, it should be noted that they have slowed considerably. While the monthly inflow still amounted to 67,972 mt in April, this figure dropped to 25,751 mt in May. Issue is that farmers are still holding on to stocks in the hope of cashing in on an off-season price hike.

BRUSSELS. Although EU importers spent less on spices in 2025 than in the record year of 2024, the import value is still quite high as official statistics show. Record amounts were, in fact, spent on cardamom, fenugreek and spice mixtures, saffron and turmeric. Pepper tops the chart. While the year-to-year import value has risen for cinnamon, cloves and mace, the opposite is the case for capsicum, ginger and vanilla, cumin, nutmeg and coriander and curry.
