Spices: Desperate bid to improve quality

GUJARAT. Buyers in Germany frequently complain about the lack of quality in India. They prefer to purchase spices from Eastern Europe and Asia. Hopes now rest on common quality standards.

 

The country is increasingly trying to adhere to global standards. With he Codex Alimentarius commission having adopted standards for black, white and green pepper, cumin and thyme to introduce common standards for global trade the government now sees a new chance for India to boost overseas demand.

Cumin

Prices have dropped this week to promote buying. Cumin, Grade A, 99% is currently trading for 2,922 USD/mt FOB. Heavy rains are, however, preventing arrivals and ff demand continues to increase prices are definitely set to rise very soon.

Coriander

The market has witnessed nominal price increases this week with coriander, Eagle 5% Split trading for 842 USD/mt FOB. This trend is, however, not expected to last. Buyers prefer to play it safe since consumption is expected to drop. Cheap import offers are adding pressure to the market.

Turmeric

Sowing is progressing well, all that is required is the Monsoon rain. Notable reductions in price are not to be expected for now due to an increase in demand and limited supplies. Turmeric, Finger, Salem, Double Polished is currently trading for 1,280 USD/mt FOB.

Chilli

Prices are lower than last year giving rise to hopes that demand will remain strong over the next few weeks. Buyers are mainly interested in high quality purchases, which has resulted in nominal price increases with chilli, S4, stemless trading for 1,385 USD/mt.

Cardamom

Supplies for exportable grade capsules are rather limited. Adverse weather conditions are suspending arrivals. The exporters have nevertheless purchased as much as 20 mt last week. The prices for cardamom, 8 mm have dropped to 23,170 mt.

The market is closely following the price movements for pistachios and raisins. Almonds have taken quite a curious turn. Cumin is also showing some fluctuations.
