Spices: Farmer uprising expected

GUJARAT. Farmers have been busy bringing in the Kharif harvest for more than a month. Many products are significantly cheaper than they were this time last year, which is why they are gradually losing patience.

 

In some instances, even the guaranteed minimum price is not being achieved. The farmers in the cultivation regions of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Punjab are particularly affected. 

Cumin
Prices for cumin have increased to 2,460 EUR/mt FOB, but this trend will not last. In Gujarat, farmers finished sowing, which put them ahead of schedule. In addition, a decline in export demands is expected to prevent further price hikes.

BRUSSELS. Although EU importers spent less on spices in 2025 than in the record year of 2024, the import value is still quite high as official statistics show. Record amounts were, in fact, spent on cardamom, fenugreek and spice mixtures, saffron and turmeric. Pepper tops the chart. While the year-to-year import value has risen for cinnamon, cloves and mace, the opposite is the case for capsicum, ginger and vanilla, cumin, nutmeg and coriander and curry.
