Origins and use

The German chemist Andreas Sigismund Marggraf discovered that beets contain sugar in 1747. More than 50 years later the chemist Franz Carl Achard established the first industrial sugar beet refinery in Kunern, Prussia.

Sugar is, however, not only produced from sugar beets. Cane sugar production is also widely spread. While countries in Europe and Asia commonly grow sugar beets, countries in the Far East and South America mainly cultivate cane sugar.
