Sugar: EU confronted with challenges in 2020/2021

BRUSSELS/FRANKFURT. Market players are sounding the alarm bells over declines in production, particularly in France and in Germany. Concerns are being voiced that Germany's sugar suppliers will not be able meet food industry demand at the end of August. EU-UK trade has also been adversely impacted by Brexit.

Prices set to rise

Spot market prices have risen for granulated sugar, EEC Cat II in recent weeks. While bigbags were trading in a range of EUR 0.45-0.46/kg DDP Germany at the start of the season in October, prices have now risen to EUR 0.475-0.485/kg. Traders are certain that prices will continue to rise as supplies are slowly but surely starting to run low.
