FRANKFURT. In the year 1747, the German chemist Andreas Sigismund Marggraf discovered the sugar content of the beet. And roughly fifty years later, the chemist Franz Carl Achard established the basis of the industrial sugar production.
The world’s first beet sugar factory was built in the Silesian village of Konary. While the growing of sugar beets is common in the European and Western Asian area (Europe, Russia etc.), sugar cane is primarily grown in Eastern Asia and South America (Brazil, India etc.).
