FRANKFURT/PARIS. This year's drought is the reason for very mixed yields in German sugarbeet cultivation. Meanwhile, sugar prices are relatively uniform for German customers.

Larger crop in Germany?

This year, the French sugar beet harvest was not only confronted with extreme weather conditions, but also with a massive problem of viral yellowing. As a result, the French parliament approved in a special session an emergency approval for the use of neonicotinoids in seed dressing in sugar beet cultivation. This approval is to be valid for the cultivation years 2021 and 2023 at the latest, in order to prevent possible damage in the coming year. The 2020 crop is estimated to total 30.5 million mt, about 20% less than last year
