Sugar: revised EU production estimates

WASHINGTON D.C./WIESBADEN. In the recently issued sugar semi annual for the EU the USDA has revised the 2019/2020 production estimates. Brexit and the stagnating sugar consumption are challenges the market is confronted with.

EU turns into a net importer

This year’s drought-like conditions throughout large parts of the EU has prompted the USDA to revise the Sugar production estimates downwards to 17.9 million metric tonnes. In addition, it is stated that last year’s drought had a larger impact than expected, which is why the production estimates for 2018/2019 have also been revised downwards to 17.6 million metric tonnes.
