Sugar: Russia remains the leading processor in 2017/18

MOSCOW. It was a long road for Russia from being the largest importer of sugar in the world to a big player in the export market. The production of beet sugar is expected to reach a record 6.6 million MT in 2017/18.

State of affairs

According to SoyuzRosSahar (The Union of Sugar Producers in Russia), the production of sugar from sugar beet stood at 5.98 million MT on 28 December 2017 - 500,000 MT more than at the end of 2016.

In 2017 the sugar refineries, processing sugar beets, amounted to 43. In 2016 there were 52 processing plants. Daily production of sugar ranged at 24 thousand MT in 2017, which is 1.5 times higher than daily consumption. At the end of December 2017, as much as 32 sugar factories had completed their production season.
