Sugar: No subsidy plan for sugarcane growers

Indian Food Ministry thinks to help sugar mills and plan to increase domestic sugar prices.

The sugar production is estimated to rise sharply from 20.3 million tonnes in last marketing year to 29.5 million tonnes in the current year, resulting in fall in ex-mill and retail prices in the domestic market. Even global market is depressed currently.

According to food ministry, if sugar mills exports 2 million tons sweetener, even at their loss, the domestic prices will be improved and this will benefit mills to clear the remaining stock in the domestic market.
