KIEV. Although the first plants have started processing sugar beets, the production prospects are anythign but enouraging for this season.

Discouraging production prospects

Two sugar producing plants have started operating in the western region of the Ukraine, other plants will start oparting soon. Due to the low sugar prices the number of producing plants have, however, been cut from 42 to32 this year. Adverse weather conditions, drought and pests, especially in the central southeastern parts of the country, have reportedly also caused considerable crop damages. Sugar production is, therefore, expected to decline.
