MANISA. According to current rumours in the Turkish dried fruit market, the official crop estimates for sultana and raisin production in 2020 should be placed between previous forecasts and farmers' indications.

275.000 metric tonnes under discussion

As recently as June, Turkish sultana and raisin production had been estimated at 300,000 metric tonnes during the INC webinar, while farmers had been predicting a result of 250,000 metric tonnes for some time due to the weather conditions. Rumour has it that the official production estimates, which have not yet been announced, will probably be 275,000 metric tonnes.

The new crop should be available on the market in a few weeks and still the weather plays a decisive role in the yield and quality of the crop. While cool temperatures and rainfall were previously risk factors, market players report that the current hot weather of over 40°C is not optimal, either.

New crop not below USD 1,600 per metric tonne

Last Monday the TMO's purchase prices for hazelnuts were announced, as was the decision that the government organization would join the in the apricot market intervention buying. A statement for the sultana market, however, has not yet been made.

Despite the significantly lower sultana prices from countries such as China, market players are currently speaking of being unable to offer Standard, Type 9 below USD 1,600 per metric tonne in the 2020/21 season. Meanwhile, the price indications for Chinese sultanas, Type 9, Grade A from the new crop are USD 1,260 per metric tonne CIF Hamburg and RTU-Grade is quoted at USD 1,400 per metric tonne CIF Hamburg.
