SOFIA/BRUSSELS. July and August will prove decisive in the EU. Farmers are switching to sunflower seeds in Russia. EU imports are down on last year.

Decisive July and August

Adverse weather conditions sharply reduced output in many EU member states in 2024. While prolonged drought is again presenting a challenge in France this year, rain has improved prosects in Bulgaria and Romania. In Bulgaria, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food expects yields to range 2% higher than the five-year moving average and even 23% higher than last year. In Romania, yields should surpass the five-year moving average by 7%.
