Sunflower seeds: harvest in Ukraine has started

KYIV/BEIJING. Reports from the growing regions already suggested it and the US Department of Agriculture had also already revised EU sunflower seed production downwards. In the current report of the European Commission, the production estimate was reduced again by 5.6% compared to last month.

Yield correction and start of harvest

Instead of a yield increase compared to the 2021 EU sunflower seed production, the European Commission now forecasts a significant deficit compared to last year. Overall, EU sunflower seed production is expected to decline to 9.89 million mt, about 4.3% less than last year. Due to the unfavourable weather conditions, a smaller crop is expected in most growing countries despite larger acreages; only the forecast for Bulgaria still foresees an increase in production.
