Sunflower seeds: high prices paralyse the market

SOFIA/KIEV. As Russia is currently not supplying any raw materials, Moldova is by far the most important third-country sunflower seed supplier for the EU. Both Russia and Ukraine were able to achieve very good crops this year. In Bulgaria, the high prices keep the market quiet.

60% of imports come from Moldova

In both Russia and Ukraine the forecasts for good results have been confirmed. According to recent reports, both countries have been able to produce more than 15 million mt of sunflower seeds so far. In Russia, 9.6 million ha were harvested, with a preliminary crop result of 15.3 million mt. In Ukraine, a higher yield per hectare was achieved, which is why the 6.44 million ha harvested so far are said to have produced around 15.8 million mt.
