SOFIA. The predicted rainfall has occurred and brought some relief to the dried-out growing regions in Bulgaria. Meanwhile, ADM has released the latest EU crop forecasts for 2020.

Price decline in Bulgaria

Two public holidays restricted trading activity in the Bulgarian sunflower seed market in the past few days. Market players also report that demand from Turkey is slowly declining. As a result, the official quotations for black in-shells with a 96% purity have fallen to EUR 348 per metric tonne CPT Varna.

Bakery kernels are also lacking in price driving factors after the wave early release orders, which is why prices range at a level of EUR 0.65-0.68 per kg FCA Bulgaria this week. Moldavian and Ukrainian bakery kernels are at similar levels, as prices in Bulgaria are virtually present the key currency.

New crop currently at EUR 0,68 per kg

The new crop is increasingly coming into focus and prices are already being mentioned. Currently there are offers for Bulgarian bakery kernels from the 2020 crop of EUR 0,68 per kg DDP Germany. However, market players reckon that demand is not sufficient to support this level and consider a return to last year's prices is quite possible. At the beginning of the 2019/2020 season, prices were still at EUR 0.62 per kg DDP Germany. The experts of ADM currently estimate this year's sunflower seed crop in Bulgaria at 1.843 million metric tonnes, which is a plus of 1.2% compared to last year. EU-wide, however, a decline of around 1.3% to 9.237 million metric tonnes is expected.
