SOFIA. Sowing is about to start in Bulgaria. While rumour has it that growers may switch to other products this year, the first reference prices have already been issued for the new sunflower seed crop.

Growers may switch to corn

Sunflower seed sowing is expected to start this week in Bulgaria. Although encouraging reports on sowing would be most welcome in the heated market, rumours are circulating that last year's difficult growing conditions will prompt some farmers to switch to corn. Reliable estimates will be issued in March.

In December, Coceral estimated that this year's production would range higher than last year's. That is if yields improve and the area sown is extended. Coceral will also issue revised estimates in March.
