SOFIA/BRUSSELS. The European Commission published its latest crop forecast for the 2026/2027 season at the end of last week. The figures are significantly higher than those in last month’s report.

EU crop revised upwards

The European Commission’s June report held a positive surprise. Compared with the 2025 crop, sunflower seed production in 2026 is now expected to be significantly higher than initially anticipated. Last year, lower yields due to unfavourable weather conditions resulted in production of just 8.722 million mt. For this year, experts currently expect not only a larger acreage (+4.1% to 4.854 million ha), but also significantly higher yields (+11.2% to 2.08 mt/ha), meaning that production is estimated to rise by 15.7% year-on-year to 10.09
