Sunflower seeds: possible supply squeeze ahead

SOFIA/BUCHAREST. Despite the considerable shortfall in production, Romania's exports are up and running for sunflower seeds. Carry-over supplies may indeed be very limited.

Oil mills switch to soy and rapeseed

Romania is one of the leading sunflower seed producers in the EU and may start the 2025/2026 marketing year with very limited supplies. Although this year's production slumped by 38% to 1.242 million mt as compared with last year according to official European Commission statistics, exports are only lagging 9% behind last year. Romania's oil mills are also purchasing large volumes of crude sunflower oil in Ukraine to compensate for the small crop.
