SANTIAGO. According to ChileNut’s Monthly Shipment Report for September in-shell walnut exports dipped in the first six months of the season. Shelled walnut shipments flatlined. Spring holds quite a few challenges for growers.

Dent for inshells

Chile’s total in-shell walnut exports range 14% lower than last year. India has maintained its leading position for in-shell walnuts with a 20% rise in shipments. Vietnam as only other country from Asia in the top ten destination chart is, by contrast, sporting a 16% decline. At 29,254 mt the subtotal exports to Asia/Oceania stand 18% higher than last year’s 24,839 mt.

Turkey holds second position, but shipments to here have slumped by 31%. Contrary to this, exports to Morocco have more than doubled. The subtotal shipments to the Middle East/Africa as a region have declined sharply by 49%, from 29,694 mt in the first half of 2025/2026 to 15,245 mt in the first half of the current season.

Europe has purchased a larger volume of 19,217 mt than the Middle East/Africa. Yet, this is 8% less than the 20,932 mt registered last year. Italy as the leading buyer on the continent is showing a moderate 4% decline and Spain and Germany more pronounced downturns exceeding 40%. Chile’s exports to Russia have, by contrast, more than tripled.

Shipments to neighbouring Peru have gained by 17% and have more than doubled to Brazil. At 2,315 mt the subtotal exports to America range as much as 43% higher than last year’s 1,622 mt.

15% still to be sold

As ChileNut further reports about 70% of the crop was shipped at the end of September and commitments ranged at 85% in mid-September with around 15% of production left to be sold, which is normal for this time of the year. Budbreak started at the beginning of October. Growers are busy managing recent rainfalls, rising temperatures and moisture conditions in spring. As General Manager Macarens Pons notes the recent weather conditions may boost disease development, especially in Chile’s southern production areas.
