Walnuts: China steps up exports

... 8,811 metric tonnes of shelled walnuts in January-August 2019. This is a decrease of 1,250 metric tonnes over the same period in 2018. Contary to this, in-shell shipments more than doubled from 14,998 metric tonnes in January-August 2018 to as much as 29,938 metric tonnes in the same period in 2019.

Imports to Germany

Germany imported 1,731 metric tonnes of shelled walnuts from China between January and November 2019, which is a 3% decline on the same period in 2018. Total imports range at 38,037 metric tonnes for January-November 2019, which is a nominal decrease over 2018. Although shipments from the US, China and Moldova have declined, the rise in shipments from Chile, the Ukraine and France and Spain have compensated for the shortfall.

Production volumes and prices

The USDA in-shell production estimates for China differ considerably from the INC estimates. While the USDA reckons that average production ranged at 1 million metric tonnes over the last five years, the INC sates that production in China has nearly doubled from 540,000 metric tonnes in 2015 to 1 million metric tonnes in 2019. Annual global production exceeds 2 million metric tonnes. The reference prices for walnut kernels from China, LHP 80%, range at EUR 6.10 FCA per kg FCA Spain. Light halves are trading at EUR 5.40 per kg FCA.
