SANTIAGO. Chile’s walnut exports have declined sharply this season. Europe, however, stands out.

Europe stands out

October was strong for inshell exports but weak for shelled walnut exports. Monthly inshell exports reached 6,762 last month, which is 14% up on the 5,041 mt shipped in October 2023. Shelled walnut exports, by contrast, declined by 29% from 94,149 mt in October 2023 to 67,014 in October 2024. Total exports are 29% down for inshell walnuts and 12% down for shelled walnuts.

Inshell exports to India may have slumped by 30%, but the country still accounts for 46% of Chile’s total exports and local suppliers are not tiring of emphasising the importance of this market. Shipments to Turkey are showing an even sharper decline of 55%. Contrary to this, exports to Italy are 9% up. Europe is, in fact, the only region to which Chile’s exports have climbed. They range 16% higher than last year at 17,120 mt.

Shelled walnut exports also down

For shelled walnuts Spain is the leading export destination, followed by Italy and Germany. Here again Europe is the only region to which exports have risen, albeit by a much more moderate 1% to 16,900 mt. While exports to Spain are 6% up, they have declined sharply by 25% to Italy. Shipments to Germany have risen by 2%. Exports to Brazil have most notably decreased by 42%.
