SOFIA. The disappointing walnut production of 2017 in Poland, Croatia and Hungary is driving buyers towards Bulgaria, where the freshly harvested arrivals are being snatched from the traders' hands.

Dream crop volumes

Bulgarian walnut farmers report that their walnut trees have not carried a yield like this since decades. For the producers, especially after the disaster of last year, this is a true blessing. In 2016, a large portion of the walnut crop was destroyed by frost during the flowering period. The walnuts are already being harvested in the Northwest of the country, and farmers in the remaining regions will follow suit by the end of September.

Bulgaria as a lonesome saviour

The first offers for Bulgarian walnut kernels from the new crop can already be found on the market. Walnut kernels (50% halves, 40% quarters, 10% eighths) are currently being offered for 8.50 EUR/kg DDP Germany, the expected delivery time is of about two weeks. The prices are comparatively high, but the lack of alternatives because of the poor production results in Poland, Croatia and Hungary makes the level interesting.

In a few weeks, the Ukrainian walnut crop should also be available on the market; they are the third biggest walnut producer worldwide after China and the USA. The market situation should then relax and the Bulgarian walnut prices should drop again.
