SANTIAGO. Chile witnessed a weak finish to the export season for walnuts. Strong demand in India supported shipments. Prospects are far from encouraging in 2024/2025.

Slumps in March

March, the final month of Chile’s export season for walnuts, was rather weak. Monthly inshell exports slumped by 41% to 116 mt as compared with March 2023. Shelled walnut exports also ranged 37% lower at 444 mt according to ChileNut. Combined total exports of inshell and shelled walnuts only range a bit higher than last year at 137,470 mt.

India is a success story as shipments to here rose sharply by 87%. Contrary to this, shipments to Turkey declined by 21%, whereas shipments to Italy rose by 11%. The outlook for 2024/2025 is far from encouraging. Harvest delays and adverse weather conditions will prompt in-shell production to slump by 25% to an estimated 134,576 mt as compared with last year’s 181,648 mt as the figures present at this year’s International Nut and Dried Fruit Council Congress show.
