SACRAMENTO/CANBERRA. Australian Almonds has now officially announced its crop forecast for the 2026 almond season. Early flowering in Northern California could pose risks.

Early flowering possible in Northern California

Almond blossoming is about to begin in the US growing regions. According to media reports, mild temperatures are expected to accelerate the start of almond blossoming in Northern California. This poses a risk to the blossoms. Almond blossoming usually lasts from mid-February to early March. However, colder temperatures and precipitation are forecast for the end of February. A spokeswoman for the Butte County Farm Bureau said: “Once the rain happens or the temperatures begin to dip below freezing level, then the blossoms, which are very delicate, sometimes can’t withstand that”.

It should also be noted that the bees that are supposed to pollinate the blossoms during this period do not fly when temperatures are too low and are therefore unable to perform this activity. Growers are preparing for the possibility that the pollination period could be delayed, while at the same time the humidity caused by possible rainfall increases the risk of fungal infections. In some cases, pesticides would be used in advance and irrigation systems would be used at temperatures around freezing point to prevent frost damage. However, farmers have not yet given up hope that the weather will not turn out too badly for them.

New record crop in Australia?

While flowering is just beginning in California, the almond harvest in Australia is in full swing from mid-February onwards. The experts at Australian Almonds have now published their first official estimate for the 2026 almond crop. Current projections suggest that production could reach 166,892 mt of shelled almonds, which would be an increase of around 7% on the previous year and even around 2,500 mt more than the record crop of 2024 (163,148 mt). In November, experts announced the final result of the 2025 almond crop; at 155,697 mt, last year's result was even slightly above the initial estimates of 155,531 mt.
