Almonds: The critical phase begins

SACRAMENTO. The blossoming season in California’s growing regions will begin in just a few weeks, and until then the most important factor for the 2018 US almond crop is the weather.

 

Larger acreage in 2018
By the end of last year, there had been a lack of precipitation in California’s growing regions. Recent rainfall in Sacramento has at least kept the acute drought risk at bay, though market operators should be monitoring weather developments closely in the next six to eight weeks. A warm, dry winter in 2018 could reduce yields significantly, even though an additional 100,000 acres can be cultivated and harvested this year.
