Exports exceed 200 million pounds
In October, monthly exports exceeded 200 million pounds for the first time since November 2024 as the most recent Position Report issued by the Almond Board of California shows. At 201 million pounds the volume exported stood 5% higher than the 191 million pounds registered in October 2024. By contrast, domestic shipments failed to reach the 50-million-pound threshold for the third consecutive month in October 2025. At 48 million pounds, domestic shipments dipped by 29% on the 67 million pounds shipped in October 2024. Net monthly shipments stood 4% lower at 249 million pounds in October this year than the 258 million pounds recorded in October last year.
Strong demand
At 604 million pounds total shipments range 6% lower than last season with exports nearly flat at 458 million pounds and domestic shipments showing a sharp 21% decline. Exports to India as leading destination also range 29% lower than last year. Yet, as US producer Select Harvest highlights consumer demand is still strong and large volumes will be shipped to India in the next few months. Exports to the United Arab Emirates have dipped by a more modest 5% as buyers in the Middle East have turned more cautious according to Select Harvest. Shipments to Turkey are even 19% down. Confidence, however, prevails that demand will pick up prior to Ramadan, which starts in February.
Contrary to this, shipments to Spain have surged by 52%. Exports to other destinations in Western Europe, such as the Netherlands, Italy and Germany, have also witnessed double-digit rises. In how far demand may dip with buying for Christmas and New Year complete remains to be seen as importers have been acting on a hand-to-mouth basis and general expectation is that demand will be high in the coming years.
US exports to Vietnam have also nearly doubled with Southeast Asia showing a strong growth rate. Countries such as Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia supply China, California’s former top customer. Direct shipments to here have, however, dwindled to a mere 6 million pounds this season so far.

Tight spot possible
At 1.698 billion pounds stock receipts stood nearly 8% lower than last year on 31 October 2025. Industry expectations are that final crop receipts will range at 2.7 billion pounds. Yet, wet weather conditions have delayed processing in California in the past two months, which may also impact quality. Uncertainty prevails concerning supply. If demand remains strong, particularly in India, the industry may very well find itself in a tight spot.
