This year, weather conditions have been favorable for almonds. Farmers expect a strong harvest.

SOFIA. So far in the year, prospects for the new crop are encouraging. The weather has been favorable, and farmers are expecting a strong harvest.

Almonds: local prices kneel to no external competitive market forces

Prices of locally grown conventional almonds are much higher than their foreign counterparts, for instance the Californian almond. Prices differ sometimes as much as 1.50 EUR/kg in favor of the local crop. Organic almonds reach as much as 10.00 - 11.00 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria, depending on the quality of the crop and the season. This season, international buyers should not expect lower prices because of the forecasted strong output, since local supply is small and the market easily accepts the higher prices.

The curse: local supply only dents domestic demand

Almonds have not been so widely popular as walnuts, and as a result, their cultivation has not been so widespread throughout the country. For instance, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, output of harvest 2014-15 was estimated at 438 mt, collected from an area of 627 ha (yield of 699 kg/ha) while that of harvest 2015-16 reached an estimate of 424 mt, collected from an area of 574 ha (yield of 739 kg/ha). Local supply is too small to do more than dent local demand, and as a result, every year Californian imported almonds close the gap between local demand and supply.
