CANBERRA. Rainfall has led to a slow start to the export season in the Australian almond market. Domestic deliveries, however, have increased slightly. Crop forecasts remain optimistic.

High expectations despite delivery delays

The heavy rainfall at the start of the harvest season has taken its toll on Australian almond growers. According to the latest report from the Almond Board of Australia, growers have had to postpone deliveries to processors and shelling plants due to the recurring rain showers that followed. The weather conditions prevailing in March in the Riverland and Sunraysia growing regions are likely to limit the potential of the 2026 crop for the marketing of inshell almonds, with a larger proportion of the crop entering the market as shelled almonds. Nevertheless, the Australian almond industry currently expects a good production outcome. Before the start of the new season, experts had estimated the crop at 166,892 mt.

Exports have declined significantly

On 1 March 2026, the Australian almond market kicked off the new season. In the first month of the 2026/27 financial year, a total of 5,878 mt of shelled and unshelled almonds were shipped domestically and overseas, which is around 21% less than in the same month of the previous year. Domestic deliveries amounted to 1,684 mt (+3% year-on-year), whilst exports fell by 28% year-on-year to 4,195 mt. It should be noted, however, that this still represents the fourth-best result for the start of the Australian season since records began.

China remains the most important market, with shipments there actually rising by 19% to 2,233 mt. Exports to Vietnam were also higher, while shipments to Europe fell sharply.
