Almonds: tricky demand situation

SACRAMENTO/MADRID. Although July ended strong for US exports and harvesting has started in some parts of California, the industry is cautious about demand in 2023/2024.

Strong July cannot save the day

Although California succeeded in shipping a total of 187 million pounds in the final shipping month of July, which is 10% up on the same month last year, and monthly exports ranged 16% higher at 130 million pounds, this was not enough to turn the tide for the entire season. Total US exports amount to 1.848 billion pounds in 2022/2023, which is 1% down on the 1.869 billion pounds shipped overseas in 2021/2022. Domestic shipments even range 6% lower than last year at 716.355 million pounds. Grand total shipments are 3% down on last year
