Round Pistachio Market in Iran

Last year, the delay in harvesting time of Fandoghi pistachio in Iran caused the lack of production and this lack had been felt enormously. The Iranian pistachio farmers and trader's experience shows that the remained pistachios in warehouses from the last year will regulate the market supply and demand automatically. But from August we have faced with an unusual routine. The new arrival of pistachio till first of September just could offset the lack of supply from the last year and it caused a high level start for new crop prices.

The first type of pistachio which is harvested in all around Iran is Fandoghi pistachio. Based on the law of supply and demand, it was expected that the Fandoghi pistachio price starts at very high levels. In that time, it remained about 2 weeks to harvesting season in Kerman and traders needed to supply their products faster. This issue caused a high tendency in farmers to sell their products as soon as they can and obviously the result was a high supply in a short time. On the other hand, this year inverse what was expected, the most harvested size in Fandoghi pistachios was 30~32 (pcs/oz) and 32~34(pcs/oz). That is while the usual size of pistachios had been 28~30 (pcs/oz) in recent years. High supply and harvesting Fandoghi pistachios in little sizes caused a 10% decrease in prices at the beginning of September.

In the middle of September, the Kerman Fandoghi pistachios have arrived in the market mostly with 30~32 size. The customers doubt about the absence of high-quality product have forced them to be patient about buying but the supply continued simultaneously. The religious holidays of Moharram in Iran caused a delay in buying pistachios from supplying centers of Khorasan such as Mah-Velat, Bardeskan and Feyz-Abad. The Kerman supplying centers had the same condition with 10 days lag. So the decreasing of prices have continued till the last days of supplying fresh pistachios.
