FSSAI give order for imported black pepper investigation

FASSIA has asked the department officials to be cautious about this kind of imports. This developments have come at such a time that when the Pepper Growers are worrying about cheap imports and quality. Industry has demanded the minimum import duty from the government. Nishant R Gurjar, a member of the Working Committee of the United Planters Association of Southern India (UPASI) and the leading producer of Black Pepper, said that while production is stable, on the one hand demand is rising in the country.

In India, domestic demand of black pepper is increasing almost four percent annually. The current demand is estimated at 60,000 tonnes per year. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Vietnam is getting cheap black pepper from Sri Lanka, with which India has set up Free Trade Agreement (FTA). In this way, the cheap Vietnamese pepper market bought by traders is being sold as per the Indian pepper.

Gurjar said that we have put our point in front of the government. Indian Pepper is known for its quality. We do not have such a mixture of Indian pepper with Vietnamese Pepper. This will lose the identity of Indian Pepper. As per the information, the import duty on pepper is generally 70%. According to the ASEAN agreement, the amount of pepper imported from Vietnam is 54%, whereas under the SAFTA, only 8% duty under FTA Agreement for the amount of black pepper coming from Sri Lanka is charged. This is the reason why a group of merchants is bringing the black pepper of Vietnam to India via Sri Lanka.

Black Pepper Growers of India have approached the Central Government for charging a minimum import duty of $6,000 per tons on pepper coming from Vietnam. Industry experts say that Vietnam has set a record of 180,000 to 200,000 tons of crop. He produces one-third of the world's total production. Compared to around $9,000 per tons in India, prices are around US$5,000-5,200 per tons from Vietnam.
