CHRUDIM. Buyers are putting pressure on the Czech blue poppy traders with increasingly low price expectations, but farmers are not willing to sell their commodities at a lower price.

To still be able to keep trade activities going, the suppliers say that they have no choice but to reduce their profit margin. Czech blue poppy with less than <20 ppm morphine is currently being offered for 1.20 EUR/mt DDP Germany.

Stress-free outlook
The smaller acreage will probably lead to a lower production volume compared to 2016, so that the prices for blue poppy seeds from the 2017 crop should be above the current level. The first commodities from the new crop are being offered for 1.26 EUR/mt DDP Germany.

According the market players, shortages are not to be expected. Last year, about 29,000 mt of poppy seeds were harvested in the Czech Republic, of which 20,000 mt were exported until now, and at the same time, 2,500 mt were purchased from external sources. For the next few months, it is estimated that 10,000 mt of poppy seed are still available on the market. The blue poppy share of the Czech poppy production is of about 80%, while white poppy accounts for about 15%.
