CHRUDIM. Low prices and excellent crops have failed to attract buyers in Germany

Germany reduces imports

Neither the comparatively low price level nor the good crop results in the last few years were able to prevent Germany from reducing its poppy imports once more this year. Since 2015, imports during the first quarter of the year dropped by more than 50%.

Prices are running away

Although supplies are sufficient, it is becoming increasingly harder to obtain high quality products.

A comparatively high portion of the 2016 blue poppy crop is darker in colour and also has a high moisture content, which makes corresponding processing steps necessary to preserve the poppy seeds. Lower availability of premium quality together with a stronger Czech crown caused the prices to rise again last week. Meanwhile, premium quality Czech blue poppy is being offered for 1,250 EUR/mt DDP Germany.

The new crop is developing positively, but more precipitation would do the plants good. There is still a risk of drought, therefore the weather in the next days and weeks will be a decisive factor for the further development.
