CHRUDIM. Confusion governs the market in the Czech Republic. And yet, the prices on offer are remarkably similar.

Estimates differ by 8,500 mt

Although all market players agree that this year’s yields will be considerably smaller, the extent of the impact on production is a matter of debate. Production estimates vary greatly between 14,500 mt and 23,000 mt. While official estimates state that yields range at 0.70 mt/ha, several traders rather reckon with a lower yield of 0.50 mt/ha. Reliable estimates are, in other words, impossible at this stage.

Remarkably similar prices

Surprisingly, however, the prices for the new crop offered by the different traders are remarkably similar. They range at about 1.85 EUR/kg DDP Germany and it is almost certain that price fixing has taken place. Although the producers would like prices to be as high as 2.00 EUR/kg, traders reckon that that prices of 1.50 EUR/kg are more realistic in the long run. A supplier expects prices the reach this level in January at the latest as soon as the market turns quieter.
