CHRUDIM. Considerable price hikes are giving rise to rumours that one dealer is buying all positions available in the Czech Republic.

Prices jumped by 4%

The prices rose from 1.18 EUR/kg to 1.23 EUR/kg DDP Germany within an exceptionally short time. It was only last week that traders were complaining of famers intending to increase the raw seed prices and buyers who were not prepared to accept higher prices.

Smaller production expected

Sowing has started. But the most recent crop estimates are not very encouraging. Although it was initially reckoned that this year’s crop would be similar in size to last year’s, it now seems that it will be smaller. Traders expect acreage to drop by 10% in comparison to last year. If the yields remain similar to last year’s average yield of 0.80 mt/ha a crop size of 25,600 mt may be expected. This would be a three-year low.
