CHRUDIM. Sowing is estimated to have risen this year. The weather will now prove decisive for yields.

Production may reach 32,000 metric tonnes

Poppy seed sowing is currently estimated 40,000 ha, which would be an increase of 12% over last year. Due to dry weather yields have, however, frequently ranged below the average of 0.80 metric tonnes per hectare in recent years. Unofficial production estimates currently range at 26,000-32,000 metric tonnes. Since production is expected to range on a similar level as last year market players are not reckoning with drastic shifts in prices in the new season. At present, the weather is dry and sunny, but rain will prove essential over the next few weeks.

Prices are stable for the time being

Precise information on sowing should emerge in Turkey over the next two to three weeks. Market players have, however, recently reckoned that farmers woul dswitch to white poppy seeds this year. The reference prices remain firm. Spot purchases are lacking in Turkey and in the Czech Republic.

The price indications are unchanged from the previous week. Spot buying is still lacking in both the Turkish and Czech blue poppy markets.
