CHRUDIM. On the Czech blue poppy seed market, the farmers are setting the tone. The harvest is finished, but producers are not ready to let go yet.

Crop decline by 27%

After the horror predictions of a yield drop by 70% right at the beginning of the harvest, the actual crop results were much better after all. Precise figures should be available in two or three weeks. Market players are currently expecting a decline of about 20%. About 0.80 mt/ha are produced with an average crop. In combination with the smaller acreages, the blue poppy seed production will probably be 27% lower than in 2016.

Prices are soaring

Once the market is able to get a clear picture of this year's crop, it will be easier to assess the price development. In their efforts to raise the prices as much as possible, the farmers are holding back a large portion. Traders increased their offers for blue poppy seeds from the new crop this week to 1.94 EUR/kg DDP Germany.
