CHRUDIM. Due to the low output in the Czech Republic, traders are now desperately looking for suitable seeds. Offers are scarce and prices are exploding.

Skyrocketing prices

Traders in the Czech Republic are now demanding 3.60 EUR/kg DDP Germany for blue poppy seeds with a purity of below 10 ppm morphine. The last time higher prices were demanded was back in June 2008. The problem: This year's crop is officially estimated at only 15,120 mt – about 25% less than last year. Prices in Hungary are similar. Suppliers in France are also having their seeds gilded. Some traders have reduced their delivery commitments to customers by up to 50%.
