Blue poppy seeds: Revised production estimates

CHRUDIM. The Czech Statistical Office has revised this year’s production estimates downwards once again. Traders meanwhile agree that there is no need for panic.

 

Production declines by 50%
In the current report the Office states that little more than 14,000 mt have been harvested. This equals a decline in production of more than 31% over last year. In addition, this year's poppy seed production is 39% below the 5-year moving average and 51% below the 5-year--high.

Unfavourable weather conditions reduced acreage by 17% to 27,000 ha and the yield of 0.52 mt/ha is also far below the average of 0.80 mt/ha. Previously, the Czech Statistical Office was more optimistic in expecting a yield of 0.56 mt/ha.

OLOMOUC. Czech poppy farmers are said to have harvested almost 15% more poppy seeds this year. However, further price reductions are not expected during the course of the season. EU poppy seed exports have fallen by 10% since the beginning of the season.
