Blue poppy seeds: suppliers bow to market pressure

CHRUDIM/ANKARA. Although the suppliers in the Czech Republic lowered their prices, they have so far failed to boost demand. Suppliers in Spain are sold out. In Hungary, offers abound for high-morphine seeds.

Prices are crumbling

Despite the estimated production volume of 22,000-25,000 metric tonnes, the farmers held back their blue poppy seeds at the beginning of the season to push up prices again. Instead of the expected EUR 1.90 per kg, buyers had to pay up to EUR 3.00 per kg for blue poppy seeds with a morphine content of <10 ppm for over the last few weeks.
