Buckwheat: closer ties to Russia

DALIAN/KYIV. Wheather conditions could be better for the new buckwheat crop in China. Trading also largely depends on Russia. In Ukraine, the harvest season is off to a slow start.

Conditions not that favourable in China

Slight declines in the planting areas in major producing regions along with weather disruptions are driving the market in China. In Inner Mongolia, the buckwheat capital of China, the area planted has remained stable at over 320,000 mu (21,333 ha). However, a spring drought in the first quarter of 2026 has led to expectations of reduced yields.

Drought has also impacted the Province of Shanxi, where buckwheat was sown across more than 10,000 mu (667 ha), with yields stabilising at 110 kg per mu (6.67 kg per ha). High y
