Buckwheat: prospects not too encouraging

DALIAN/BRUSSELS. Production is set to be smaller for buckwheat in Ukraine. Imports from Russia to the EU have surged in recent months. Yields are not that encouraging in China.

Production decline in Ukraine

Harvesting is around halfway complete in Ukraine. According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food an area of 26,600 ha was harvested on 21 September. This amounts to 55% of the area sown. As the average yield is 1.39 mt/ha current production has reached 37,100 mt. At this time last year, harvesting was 56% complete, the total area was much larger and production stood at a higher 57,100 mt.
