GAZIANTEP. Bulgur exports from Turkey are developing positively year-on-year. Market players are confident that the lifting of export quotas on products such as bulgur will also boost trade again.

Annual growth of 30%

The Istanbul Cereals, Pulses, Oilseeds and Products Exporters' Association (İHBİR) had an information stand at the SIAL food fair in Paris this year. According to the chairman of the board, Kazım Taycı, the İHBİR has been visiting the fair regularly for 16 years and describes the visits as very purposeful. According to Taycı, his sector can meet the export target of USD 13 billion this year. “When we take the average of the last 2 years, we are an industry that grows 30% every year. When we evaluate our imports on the basis of the ratio of exports, I can say that we are the union with the product group that creates the most added value in Turkey”, Taycı said.

In the first nine months of the current calendar year, 183 mt of bulgur worth USD 110,000 were exported from Turkey, compared to only 164 mt worth USD 80,000 in the same period in 2021. Market players are confident that exports will pick up now that export restrictions have been lifted. Export prices for Turkish bulgur are currently at a level of USD 750/mt FOB Izmir.

ISTANBUL. India’s ban on non-basmati rice exports, which became effective on 20 July 2023, has not only driven up global rice prices but has also turned bulgur into a highly attractive alternative. Although this will play into the hands of Turkey as leading exporter, shipments are not quite up to scratch this year.
