NEW DELHI. Importers in India have switched to Nigeria and Ghana for cashew nuts. Challenges also prevail in Ghana. Shipments have slowed in Burkina Faso.

Stocks nearly sold out in India

In India, most of the Tanzanian stocks have been sold with only limited volumes available. Current imports mainly originate from Nigeria and Ghana, where the price for 48 lbs is around USD 1.75/kg plus tax. Even for lower grades, the prices range well above USD 1,500/mt and for higher grades 49-50 lbs, for which availability is less, prices stand as high as USD 1,650-1,680/mt CNF. Domestic demand is steady to normal for kernels in some areas but has slowed in others. Export prices are firm.

Challenges in Ghana

Recent heavy rains have made it hard to collect and dry cashew nuts in Ghana. Deliveries from local agents are moving much slower than usual. While the nut quality remains good, processors must work much harder. Although the current weather conditions help general farming, it also creates extra labour for the cashew industry.

Finding enough cashews in the main growing regions has become a big challenge. Most nuts are currently coming from just one area, namely the Sampa district. To get enough stocks, many companies are now buying nuts at the border near Côte d’Ivoire. Quality nuts are getting harder to find in the usual places in the current peak season.

Slower shipments in Burkina Faso

Buying has gained traction in Burkina Faso as more nuts are moving to the big trading centres. Even with all this activity prices have, however, remained stable. Farmers are currently receiving USD 0.89-1.03/kg.

New legislation stipulates that exporters must sell some nuts to local factories first to help local businesses get the supplies they need. Shipments to other countries are consequently moving a bit slower. A similar situation prevails in the nearby country of Togo.
